Much of it perpetrated by self righteous zealots like the ruling clerics of the Grand Council in Iran.

Currently there are twelve women and three men awaiting death by stoning there.  Most of them for the "crime" of adultery.  Often the women have actually been raped but that matters little to the depraved bigots in power there.  So they bury them in sand and hurl fist sized rocks at them, insuring a slow, tortuous death.
